482,121 tonnes of freight transited Liège airport in 2009.
The strong performance was mainly due to the upturn in sales posted by TNT during the 4th quarter, good performances by El Al, Ethiopian and Southern Air, and the arrival of ABX Air and Avient (which has based its European hub in Liège).
“In a highly competitive market undergoing full redevelopment, Liege Airport can be satisfied with this result. With 482,121 tonnes processed in 2009, Liege Airport is Belgium’s No 1 cargo airport and the 8th largest in Europe.
Among the airport’s specific achievements, the growth in the transport of flowers, animals and fresh produce stands out in particular.
Concerning passenger traffic, 356,782 people were transported in 2009. For summer 2010, a new destination – Dalaman, in Turkey – will add to the options available to holidaymakers.
The prospects for 2010 are encouraging with the main runway extension (to 3.7 km) due to be completed and the construction of 25,000 m² warehouses. €30m will be invested to confirm Liege Airport in its role as a regional development business (the airport site provides 2,800 direct and 6,700 indirect jobs).
